Nalanda

Ruins of the ancient world's first residential university

Nalanda District, Bihar95 km from Patna
Nalanda University was one of the world's first residential universities and a renowned center of learning from the 5th to 12th centuries CE. At its peak, it housed over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers from across Asia. The university offered courses in various subjects including Buddhist philosophy, logic, grammar, medicine, and astronomy. The ruins spread over 14 hectares showcase the grandeur of ancient Indian architecture and educational systems. The site includes remains of monasteries, lecture halls, temples, and the famous library that was said to have burned for months when destroyed. Today, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses a museum with artifacts from the excavations.
