Vaishali
Ancient republic and important Buddhist pilgrimage site
Vaishali District, Bihar • 55 km from Patna
Vaishali holds the unique distinction of being the world's first republic, established in the 6th century BCE. This ancient city is deeply significant in both Buddhist and Jain traditions, being the birthplace of Lord Mahavira and the place where Buddha delivered his last sermon.
The archaeological remains include stupas, monasteries, and the famous Ashokan Pillar with a single lion capital. The Kutagarasala Vihara marks the spot where Buddha stayed during his visits to Vaishali.
Today, Vaishali attracts pilgrims and history enthusiasts who come to explore its rich heritage and understand the early democratic principles that originated here.
