Vikramshila
Ruins of ancient Buddhist university and monastery
Bhagalpur District, Bihar • 245 km from Patna
Vikramshila University was established in the 8th century CE by King Dharmapala and became one of the most important centers of Buddhist learning in ancient India. Along with Nalanda, it was considered among the finest universities of its time.
The university specialized in Tantric Buddhism and attracted scholars from Tibet, China, and Southeast Asia. The ruins reveal a massive complex with 208 rooms, temples, and monasteries spread across a large area.
Recent archaeological excavations have uncovered the main stupa, monastery cells, and a large library. The site provides insights into the advanced educational system and architectural skills of ancient India.
